Hunting Spring Gobblers In The Lowcountry
After chasing turkeys for the last two weeks straight, we have now rolled up 7 big gobblers with more misses and missed opportunities they we can believe. The weather has been pretty nice up until last weekend which kept the big birds gobbling like crazy, but then it turned wet and windy for the rest of the week shutting them up. However as everyone knows including the turkeys, we hunt rain or shine and always make the best of it…
While the weather was nice last weekend, Chris and his dad Robert from VA were here for 4 days, and the birds were working great. Chris killed a bird with me the first two mornings they were here with the biggest bird weighing in at 21lbs with a 10in beard and 1.25 inch spurs. Then Justin took him out, and they killed another good bird, bringing Chris’ total to 3 giant redheads in 3 days. Robert also had some great hunts with Henry and I, and he came close to killing a redhead himself several times including a miss on two strutters with just an hour to go in his hunt. But as we always say, that is real hunting!
Then, even after the weather turned sour on us, Justin and I kept hunting hard with Edward and his son Matthew from NC. And the hard hunting payed off late in the afternoon of their last day when a big gobbler came in for Matthew and Justin. That bird weighed 18lbs, had a 10 inch beard and sported 1 inch spurs. Justin then had another father/son team, Larry and Chris, and he kept up our successful season when he eventually called in a great bird which weighed 16lbs with a 10in beard and 1.25 inch spurs. So congratulations to everyone on a great spring gobbler hunt while here with us at Cypress Creek Hunting Lodge.
And while we have been hunting our spring gobblers hard, we haven’t forgotten about our hogs. We have been fortunate to have quite a few of our old friends in camp with us lately, and they have been hunting through the tough weather too. And one of the hunters that stuck it out was Bert. He was here in the lowcountry on a very special hog hunt with his dad, Bruce, and they took home a great big 205lb sow to cap off their time together last weekend.
This past weekend, we also had another son take a great pig while down with his dad and brother. Michel shot his 150lb boar shortly after daylight over on Boggy Creek, and that kill was his first hog ever. It also helped him quiet his brother, Matt, down who never lets him forget that he shot 2 nice bucks while with us 2 seasons ago.
So that wraps up the past 10 days of hunting here in the lowcountry. Now we have a front moving through tonight with some rain and wind. However it is supposed to clear up after that and be sunny and calm. That should get the turkeys back gobbling and hopefully the pigs moving. So come join us here in the lowcountry for a great spring hunt. We would love to have the chance to hunt with you!
And just in case you need more motivation to join us. Just check out the great hog footage that Justin captured a while back from one of our stands…
