SC Deer Hunting Season 2013

What a record breaking year for big bucks and lots of them!  2013 may be our best year ever for huge bucks and big numbers of them.  In the year of 2013 deer season, our hunters harvested 96 bucks on our 10,000 acres with 74 bucks being mature 8 to 12 pt bucks.  Our best buck of the season was a big 10pt buck that was harvested by Mike Casstevens which scored 153 3/8 BC.  We had 3 other bucks that scored in the high 140’s and several in the 130’s.  Many of the 6 and 7 pt bucks and including one 4 1/2 year old 4pt buck were all heavy racked bucks especially for SC deer.

We also harvested around 120 does this year.  Our last doe of the season was one of the largest does that I have personally seen in SC which weighed in at 170#.  This is one huge doe for SC.  The body fat and kidney fat on this deer was amazing.

We strongly feel that our management practices for healthy mature deer is definitely working.  For years we have worked to get our buck doe ratio as close to a 1 to 1 or at least a 1 buck to 2 doe ratio on our managed properties.  In the past our doe harvest has far exceeded our buck harvest.  This year our buck harvest and our doe harvest were almost equal.  We have worked hard to let as many bucks as possible reach at least 3 1/2 years of age.  We know that almost anyone would rather harvest a big mature buck than a small young buck.  Even though our buck harvest for mature bucks was very high this season, be assured that we have allowed for many mature bucks to remain for our 2014 deer season.  We can hardly wait to see those results!

Frank Denicola from NY was with us again and took this 8pt buck.  Frank also took a nice doe and a good meat hog on this hunt.

Evan from Charleston got this nice doe for his 1st deer.

David Bose from DE came for a 1 day hog hunt and went home with the meat hog he was looking for.

Tom Hendricks (James Bond) from MD hunted with us again this year and took this nice doe with his Merkel 308.

Mike Chambers with his 2 sons, 13 year old Keaton & 10 year old Kode from SC enjoyed their time together.  Congratulations to Kode for harvesting his 1st hog.

Steve Copeland from SC hunted with us again and took a nice 7pt buck.  Steve also harvested our biggest doe to date, 170# doe!  Wow!
