The Rut Starts Up In The South Carolina Lowcountry
With all of the cool weather that we have had here in the South Carolina lowcounty lately, it is no surprise that the rut has cranked up and put the bucks on their feet.
The bucks usually start scraping pretty good around the middle of October, but our normal warm fall weather often keeps them from really starting to move until around Halloween. But with this season’s nice temps, the bucks are out and already looking for does. And that has made for some good hunting for our pre-rut hunters who saw several good bucks this past weekend, missed several more and harvested two. Doug, who was down from the SC upstate with his son Austin, took a nice buck over off of Boggy Creek. Randy, another frequent Cypress Creek hunter who was up with wife, daughter and two friends from north Florida, took home a young 6 point. We also had another father/son team of Rob and Rocky of PA, down for a nephew’s graduation from the Marine’s boot camp on Parris Island, stop over for one day in hopes that they could connect on a nice wild hog. And luck was with them when Rocky put the crosshairs on a nice 90lb sow and put her right down to claim his first wild pig.
The weekend before, we had our friend Gary down from the upstate of NY trying to get a gator that he didn’t get last year. And this season he made quick work of a beautiful 6 foot 3 incher to put on the wall of his lodge. Gary also saw lots of deer and harvested a great boar that will be joining the big boar he took last year and his gator from this trip. That same weekend, we had Walter over from our coast looking to take home a cooler full of tasty venison to his kitchen, and he didn’t go home empty handed either after he rolled up a huge doe during his stay. So a big thank you to everyone for hunting with us, and a big congratulations to those that shot straight and took home a South Carolina trophy.
As for us here at Cypress Creek Hunting Lodge, we have now finished putting in almost all of our Fall food plots of clover, oats and wheat. And with the rain we have had, some of those plots are already up and drawing the deer like crazy. We are supposed to get some more rain tonight, so the plots we put in this past week will now have the moisture to get up and out of the ground too. All of these plots will really help pull and hold the does that the bucks are already in search of. Then add some cool weather and a ton of acorns on the ground, and you have the makings of some great rut hunting. Give us a call to set your dates now; we would love to hit the woods with you and put you on the lowcountry buck of your dreams!
