Cypress Creek Kicks Off Our Lowcountry Deer Season
Last Monday morning, Cypress Creek Hunting Lodge kicked off our 2011 lowcountry deer hunting season. And as usual it was hot and kind of buggy. However with two TV crews plus guests including former heavy-weight champion boxer Michael Moorer, we had a house full of hunters who were prepared to deal with whatever conditions South Carolina could throw at them, so we knew we would start pulling out some deer and hogs in no time.
And sure enough, the new season got off to a good start when Moorer’s friend Chris, shot a nice 8 point over on Pine Acres, the latest plantation we have added for our hunters. But that was just the beginning since Hunting the World TV had brought down Chip from Crosman Airguns, to see if they could shoot a good buck on camera with their new adult air rifle capable of putting down a big buck or boar as long as they are within 50 yards. And sure enough, what wanders out into the freshly planted iron clay peas to the 48 yard mark but a giant lowcountry 9 point with two kickers coming off of his brow tines. Chip then did his thing with the new rifle that shoots a nosler bullet and dropped the the giant 180lb, 4.5+ yr old buck right in his tracks with a perfect shot to the deer’s head, making it the first whitetail ever killed with an airgun. Crosman is now hoping to use this accomplishment to get the SCI club to add a new category for airguns just like muzzleloaders, crossbows and archery. So congratulations to Chip and Crosman for their “new world record”!
Cypress Creek then had the good fortune of having 3 generations of a PA family along with 2 close friends, Aaron and Melanie, come in for a few days towards the end of opening week. Eighty Seven year old Nick Jr. and his whole crew hit the woods hard and hunted without complaint during a tough full moon and were rewarded for it when most of them had opportunities on good animals. The grandson, Nick, struck first when he took down a beautiful 2.5yr old 8 point over on Boggy Creek. Then his dad Eric had two good opportunities on big boars that he couldn’t capitalize on, but that is hunting. The patriarch of the family then got in on the action, first missing a big hog, then shooting a nice meat pig that he is having mounted to sit on his fireplace. Kyle, the other grandson, then showed everyone how to drop a good hog when he punched a big 148lb boar down at the river to round out their hunt. They all left Sunday morning after a couple of great days being together in the woods, and we have no doubt that they had a great time together… Because that is truly what hunting is all about!
Our good friend Greg Stube, from Coming Home with Greg Stube, was also here with us for a few days along with his wife and son. They were in the lowcountry to also film some velvet bucks while with us, and they recorded tons of great footage of our wildlife including some really nice bucks in our cotton fields. However the giant Greg was looking for never stepped out during camera light, so he kept his finger off of the trigger in hopes of returning later during the rut for him.
We now have a couple of days off for the woods to settle back down for some more guests that will be in later this week. We will be trying to make the most of it since our bucks usually start loosing the velvet off of their racks around the end of August. So the window to harvest a nice buck in velvet is quickly coming to a close, and we definitely want to take as many good ones as we can. Give us a call if you are interested, and we will fit you in! Also, I want to remind everyone about our upcoming alligator hunting season that starts on September 10th and runs through October 8th. We have spots open, so give us a call to set up a hunt for a true dinosaur.
