Summer Hog Hunting Begins In The Lowcountry
Turkey season is over, so it is time for some summer hog hunting here in the SC lowcountry!
We all had a nice two week break after the last day of turkey season on May 1st, and that allowed our pigs to forget about us trying to kill them and get back to moving around pretty good during daylight hours. And this payed off big time this past weekend when we cranked our Spring hog hunts back up, and 6 out of our 8 hunters got shots!
Four of the guys were from West Virginia, and that state is known for producing good hunters who can make their shots. Bob got things started when he shot a great boar Thursday night, then Andy smacked a boar Friday night followed by Smiley who hammered a giant sow Saturday morning – leaving only Chris from that group without a hog. However Andy didn’t get to take his hog home after a huge storm kept us from finding it by erasing any sign of his shot at the River. But with lightening like that forcing us to grab everyone out of the stands early (always a problem in Spring/Summer), that was a price we just had to pay to keep everyone safe!
We also had Cypress Creek veterans Dan and Derrick down from Maryland, and the two made the most of their latest trip to the lowcountry. Dan, here for his 8th year, piled up a big boar while Dan dropped a nice eater pig. Peter and Angel from NJ also joined us for their second time, and Angle missed a giant boar and Peter missed a chance at a big coyote.
Several hogs were also shot right at the end of turkey season that haven’t found their way onto the blog such as the huge boar that Ann shot with her handgun while with us. Another fortunate hunter was Jessie, from the SC upstate, who was here with his dad Oscar, and he rolled up a 200lb+ boar while here.
We also had Wayne from VA, and he not only shot a tasty eater pig, he was nice enough to leave us a comment about his hunt: I wanted to thank Danny and all his staff for 3 great days of hunting. Even though the hog sightings were scarce, I did get a hog the last day, I enjoyed the hunting and seeing all the deer and turkey. The staff were all great, they made me feel right at home, the food Ms Neta cooked us each day was awesome and the accommodations were very comfortable. I would enjoy going down for another hunt early in the year during cooler weather and hopefully the hogs would be more active and the mosquitos less active.
Cypress Creek is a well run hunting lodge and based on my recent hunt, 4/11, I would recommend it to others looking for a good time, great
food and a hunter friendly atmosphere. Keep up the good work folks! Hope to see you again in the future.
And while we have moved on to our Spring hog hunting, I definitely don’t want to forget to mention the last turkey that was harvested. Our guide Henry put 17-year-old Miles on his first big gobbler while he was here hunting with his dad, Bud, from Savannah, GA. That brought our total turkey harvest to 14 for the season, and that makes it one of our best in several years. And that of course doesn’t include the ones that got away due to misses and blown opportunities or take into account all of the great hunts we had with our guests!
Like I said, now with turkey season over we will be hitting the hogs hard, but mostly on the weekends since we only have a few hunters willing to endure hot weather and bugs. But with some light clothing to help cope with the heat and a thermacell to keep the bugs at bay, it is a terrific hunt since there is so
little pressure on the pigs. We aren’t hunting them hard, and with deer season out, very few others are in the woods. This makes for some good pig hunts along with the fact that our hunts for them during the summer drop from $325 to $275 a day with all meals and comfy lodging still included. So if you are wanting to keep the hunting urges at bay, give Becky a call and let her know what dates you would like to come and hunt with us.
