Lowcountry Weather Stays Warm, Spring Gobblers Get Hot
Our lowcountry weather has turned very hot, and that has our big gobblers on fire as the breeding season starts to wind down. And while we have had a few days where it was tough to find a bird, we have been fortunate to have some really great hunts with our guests over the last week or so.
One of those hunters was Mike K. from IN, who shot two nice birds. The first was a 17lb jake with a 5 inch beard that came in and busted up our hunt just as a big longbeard was about to step into our shooting lane. So Mike took him as a consolation prize for messing up his opportunity. And then, despite hearing several hundred gobbles the first two days along with having several close encounters, we had to hunt right up until the last minutes of his 3rd day to get him a nasty, old limbhanger. The 5 year old bird weighed 18 lbs, had a 10 inch beard and 1.5 inch hooks!
You would think that killing two great gobblers while on a 3-day hunt would make a great hunting story all by itself. But then, you have to realize that something crazy always happens to Mike when he visits Cypress Creek. This time it was a helicopter from our local sheriff’s department looking for 2 shooting suspects that had escaped into the woods nearby. And when they spotted two armed guys sneaking around in camo, they came down to check us out!!! We also had several other hunters that joined us over the last week or so to pursue big turkeys including Gary from NC, and Allen and his son Travis from Valdosta, GA. Justin still has the hot calls and guided Gary and Allen both to great birds during morning hunts. Gary’s bird weighed 17lbs, had a 7 in beard and 1 inch spurs while Allen’s turkey tipped the scales at 20lbs, sported a 11 inch beard and had 1.25 inch hooks.
As for our hog hunting, the extremely hot weather has kept them moving mostly after dark for the few hunters we have had. And unfortunately, they have missed the few hogs that have ventured out past our stands during daylight hours. The one exception was Todd who rolled up a nice 130 lb boar.
Now, after a few days without any turkey hunters, we have 4 coming in for the weekend. And with the woods having a chance to settle down, we are hoping to hear lots of gobbling and hopefully put them right on some
good birds. We look forward to sharing their stories with everyone!
And of course with the season winding down, hunters are running out of time to tag a big lowcountry gobbler before the end of the season on May 1st. So if you are still considering a hunt with us, please give Becky a call ASAP so that we can get you in.
