SC Hog Hunting in the Cold & Hot Weather of February

hog hunting

In the low country of SC the temperatures of February have ranged from a low of 15 degrees to a high of 83 degrees.  We have had high winds, ice storms and plenty of rain.  Even with the up and down weather conditions of February 2014, we have managed to take some pretty good hogs.  Over the days that the weather was cold, the afternoon hunts have been hot, and on the days that were really hot weather, the morning hunts have done pretty well.  As most hog hunters know, wild hogs are very nocturnal animals and can be very unpredictable.  Just when you think you have them figured out, they will do something different.  That’s why they can be as challenging as they are and why we enjoy hunting them.

Let’s check out some of the hunters that have meet the challenge and made it happen!

DSC01831First we have Kenny Huber from MD to take a very nice dry sow.  When it comes to fine eating wild pork, you just can’t beat a good dry sow for the dinner table.

DSC01832We also had Ron Pixley back down from NY for some more SC hog hunting and he took a huge dry sow home.  Ron is an avid hunter and got the meat hog that he was after.

John Williams was down hunting the low country again with two of his buddies, Chris & Mike.  This short trip it was John that took home the bacon.  We all had a great time pursuing the SC hogs.DSC01835 DSC01836

Zach Elliott from NC was back down again to take another nice boar.  Zach took a real nice black boar on another trip here and took a great 8pt buck as well. DSC01838 Way to go Zach!

This group really hit bad weather on this trip with rain and wind on their 1 1/2 day hunt.  Although other  hogs were seen this was the only hog harvested on their hunt.  See you and the guys next year and hopefully during better weather. DSC01839

DSC01841We had Danny Cabariss here from VA and he made good on his trip with this fine boar.  Danny was so excited about his first hog that he let out a holler heard almost around the world!  Nice to see people enjoying their hunting as he did.

Congratulations Danny!

John Brown and Evan Bowling also from VA took home some bacon. DSC01843 These guys have hunted with us before and have learned to be patient and the hogs will come your way.  Way to go guys!

DSC01845Carl Smoker and his son Eric were back down from PA for some more SC hog hunting and made it happen again.  Carl’s other son Caleb also got a 50# pig. It’s always great when a family can share time together in the outdoors.  Always fun to have you guys and we look forward to your next trip.

Ryan Petersheim from PA also with this group took home a 160# dry sow.FOT3206

DSC01846Rick Pazzaglia from PA came with a group of his friends that hunt with us each year.  It was Rick’s first hunt with us and he was the one to take a great boar and made a fine shot to take it.  Way to go Rick!

What a story Brad Shiesley from NY has with this huge 300# dry sow.  Brad was in SC for some hog hunting after retiring from law enforcement in NY.  He booked a hunt with another outfitter and was very disappointed with his choice.  After several days and no luck he found Cypress Creek Hunting Lodge and stopped by to see if we had any room for another hunter.  We only had one spot available and he jumped on the opportunity.  He was not ready to go home empty handed.  We let him know that the weather was warming up and would probably slow down the hog movement.  He took the odds anyway, hunted really hard, saw sows and pigs several times and finally, on the coolest afternoon he made it happen. DSC01849 He made a perfect shot on this 300# dry sow out of a group of about 30 hogs.  He actually saw two bigger hogs but this hog gave him the best shot, two minutes before we arrived to pick him up to end the afternoon hunt.  Brad really pursed the experience and made it count.  Way to go Brad and congratulations.  Look forward to seeing you on your next hunt.

Well that’s how real fair chase hunting goes.  You give it your best and it may or may not happen, but when it does it is always worth it.  We would not hunt any other way.

Hopefully March will bring a little more consistent weather.  We will continue hunting for hogs on our best hog lands and will set aside our best turkey lands for the up and coming turkey season.  The SC turkey hunting season begins March 15 and we have been completely booked for 2014 for sometime now.  We do have a waiting list available for any cancelations and that list is growing.  Once we get into April we may be able to open up a few more spots, so if you are not on our waiting list and you want to get in a turkey hunt this year, just give Becky a call at 877-520-2245.  Otherwise our bookings for 2015 turkey season has already started.

Until the next blog at the end of March, we wish all of you the Best and Good Hunting!

Danny & Becky
